We headed to Joinville it was a long drive thru the mountains from Curitiba. So Beautiful. - and this is omiting the funny adventure of renting a car in Curitiba... Brasilian cars are economy size... and we had quite a load to haul! The first stop in Joinville was the oldest chapel in Brasil... then as we headed down the road not sure where to go next, Michael burst out… "Turn here! We need to go visit this lady!" here we found the most beautiful garden with family homes built all together. This family are not members – but they had housed the missionaries on the property for almost 30 years! She kept and served both the elders and sisters while they served the Lord. This small act had obviously blessed her life. We felt guided by the spirit as they rejoiced and said they 'knew Elder M would come' to say goodbye. A tender mercy.

Next we left @ tried to reach ‘Fernando” but no one was home… but he lives right across the street from the stake center on the hill. (It’s a huge site!)

Fernando had invited us to stay a night with his family and Mike had wanted to and worked to make the arrangements – BUT we ended up not being able to because of the time and airport flights. We had hoped that the little time we had to spend with them would bless his family. We headed down the street and found Fernando at his mother in laws home… along with all the family! It was a great time. We needed to get on the road to Sao Bento so we could arrive before dark for the planned Dessert night at the branch… but we knew we would be back and planned to stop once more on our way back to Curitiba on Sunday.

We also made a visit to Hydas’ family. Hyda is 3 or 4… she shows love and joy in everything she does! Her parents have struggles in life and in living the gospel. Just her and her mom were home and we visited about her conversion and that she was speaking in church on Sunday. We had missed her husband but also said we could stop back on Sunday when we came to get Mikes passport. (hopefully)

Sao Bento is the quaintest little German settlement I’ve seen! We arrived about 6 pm checked into the hotel, changed clothes and headed to the church! We enjoyed the sites that Elder M showed us of the areas he served and lived in.

There were only about 6 people there waiting… but by the time the opening prayer started there was a roomful of almost 50 people! They had all come to love and take pictures and meet Elder M family and say farewell! Elder M conducted most of the meeting, Daenon gave a thought in Portuguese on the straight path and narrow gate., and it takes time to stay on the path… Mom & I quickly tasted all the desserts 9 of them and then everyone dug in to share in the goodness! Lots of pictures were taken and kind words spoken in Portuguese and broken English… This was a wonderful night to see Elder M & the fruits of his labor that the Lord had allowed him to witness in the time he served in Sao Bento. We had brought with us a big bag of American “Butterfinger” candy bars that he handed out as awards to the most favorite desserts! The dessert night was a success!!!

We were starving afterwards and Elder M took us to “BLLU DOG” for the most fabulous burgers of the trip!

Sunday after church we enjoyed lunch w Sister Montagna . She’s a member but her husband and son are not. She’s amazing, always feeds the Elders, teaches seminary, has a strong testimony of living the gospel. We enjoyed ourselves so much! This was a blessing for us coming to Brazil. Tears filled my eyes as we left – I could feel how important this trip was and it filled my heart with joy to know I had listened to my heart and made it happen! As hard as it was at times… my husband loves these people, my brother loves these people, now my parents love, and understand this far away place and we all feel the love that Heavenly Father has for us - especially these people who have made memories and experiences that have changed the pattern of our lives.

The Drive back to Joinville was tense… to say the least. Daenon was super worried about driving at night (which is understandable – it is another country) But we still don’t have Elder Ms’ Papers to get him home. Mom & I offered to pray – we pray that the spirit will guide and attend the APs to bring the papers (and scriptures) at the time that we would arrive. That we would not be delayed in waiting for the papers. That our drive would be safe and uneventful. AND this is exactly what happened. We drove to the apt. Mike Clapped. Out came the AP smiling!! They’d been waiting most the day and now they would catch a bus back to the mission home! The Lord is a Loving Father.

We still had 2 appts, the first was suppose to be a quick stop @ Fernandos’ but not all the family was there – so we waited… and waited… (I feel bad now – the pictures show how unsettled Daenon & I were at this time- it was still tense – but Fernando is a wonderful convert, father, brother and friend and he deserved our time!) Finally they understood we couldn’t wait any longer, and we had one more visit…

Daenon and I agreed that we would wait in the car so that the urgency to go would be there. Dad and Mike went to the door – they were greeted with love and a strong spirit of fellowship. This Fernando had been blessed by the service of Elder M – his live had changed drastically – he had been tempted and tried in many ways – and he had persevered to this time when he loved his wife and family and future with the Lord on his side. He felt forever grateful and indebted to Elder M for his friendship and love. We had truly been directed to this home. Mom also went in to take more pictures! And as I sat in the car I cried, Tears of Love for the Lords plan, to help Mike, to help this family. This was the “one more visit” he had to make… and the Lord planned it. As we left we knew that by following the spirit as it directed us to this home was a covenant fulfilled. This is what Pres meant when he said - there is POWER in MISSIONARY WORK!

We drove safely to our hotel in Curitiba. We gave up the opportunity to see the temple in Curitiba - but it was closed for maintenance and our lives were just as changed for the better by the extra time we spent in Joinville. Curitiba was very cold… I even wore a cap, scarf, and gloves. I didn’t sleep well in Curitiba. The real estate contract at home that I’d worked so hard on had just fallen out. My clients were so sad and frustrated – I did what I could to move the steps along – but only prayer seemed to comfort me.

The next morning we boarded a flight to Curitiba… then to Foz Do Iguasu. The stumbling block to the trip was that Mike didn’t receive all of his papers to exit the country before he left the mission home. He needed his passport and visa info with him to go home. We made a few phone calls and it was decided that they would send the papers with the APs to Joinville and we could meet them there at the end of the week…

In Iguasu we were able to secure a private travel guide to drive and transport us to the sites we had planned to see – this worked out in a fabulous manner! (I highly recommend it if you go! We didn’t have to worry about driving or baggage or how much time we had, where to eat… it was all so good!)

The Itaipu Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Paraná River located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. I have wanted to see this for a long time – and it was incredible. It’s one of the largest electricity producing dams in the world. It supplies 90% of the electricity consumed by Paraguay and 19% of that consumed by Brazil. It’s amazing to me that Brazil is 100% self sustaining country.

Iguazu is a very cool place! It’s definitely a top natural wonder of the world. Iguazu Falls is located where the Iguazu River tumbles over the edge of the Paraná Plateau. It’s a place where you can stand at the edge of the deck and literally feel the power of God and His amazing creations all encompassing. You can feel it in ever drop of water, you can hear it roaring pass in the strength of the falls, you can see it in the littlest glimpse of a rainbow or butterfly...

Michael had a cell phone with him to contact people that he needed to visit. One day he made a phone call, set up an appt. He got off the phone and said “ well that’s one more visit to make! I wasn’t planning on it – but I didn’t have this other guys phone #” I laughed a bit – and wondered who this was and how our visits in his mission area would be.

It’s a meeting for the missionaries getting transferred today. The missionaries are excited and nervous! But the spirit is here with them and they have a strong desire to serve the Lord. How blessed we are to see. The Lord has blessed Elder Millyard with a wonderful mission experience that will bless him for the remainder of his life as he continues faithful in doing the Lords work. The Mission Presidents’ wife began the meeting and spoke to the elders of the time spent in the mission… “how fast it comes and goes. Be grateful you are here to serve – Thank Heavenly Father that you are here!” she spoke more on sacrifice… “Brings forth blessings – ‘Righteous Sacrifice’ is a gift to the Lord. We made covenants in the temple to offer up sacrifices. There are consequences for not keeping covenante and sometimes we do not know or understand. Problems come when elders do not care about sin.. they break rules. We must act quickly to resolve sin so we can enjoy the blessings and gifts that will be with us for eternity. Make it a habit in your companionships to be righteous so you can enjoy the blessings of the best mission in the world. Having a problem isn’t a sin… but Heavenly Father is more concerned with our desires and habits. Are we able to reach the celestial spiritual levels in this life? The elders leaving for home, including Elder M all bore witness that “this is a mission with power. Act in the Lords name with his power – to teach us all we must do. When we get here we are lost, but in the mission you can be taught all you need – this is the only true church. Amen” President Quieroz spoke to them saying: “Go home & never make this mission be let down… Be men of God. He told the story of the “Blue Butterfly” His mother persuades a renowned entomologist (William Hurt) to take them on a trip to the Costa Rican rain forest to search for the butterfly, leading to an adventure that will transform their lives. And so, their journey begins. A journey of courage, redemption and love. Inspired by a true story, this is a magical film about a courageous young boy and a jaded man who chase a dream, and whose lives are forever changed. The only way to catch a miracle is to believe in it... It’s never to late to repent. Pray for those in the process… Do things that require faith. Ask yourself who is to come? Make a difference make it better. Pray for those that need to overcome the disappointments – Study the doctrine of Christ – Pray to Love” A Story… 2 elders would always come to interview and speak of their moms at home… things were not good and their moms’ died. When he called with the news both elders said that “I was called to serve for 24 month – I will stay and finish my mission.” There’s “power” in missionary work!

Forgive me for the abridged 1-5 version of this trip… this was a super special event in our lives. I wasn’t able to go with my family when they went to Boston, MA when my sister was released from her mission. And we really wanted my parents to go to Brasil to get Mike… so we went. Kaelee was completely devestated that we left her behind, (I know she secretly dispised us for the fact we told her she was too young) Kimber was grateful she didn't have to get any shots for yellow fever required for her to go... she was relieved to say the least... It took a lot of faith and prayers and following the spirit for us to prepare and leave our girls. And we have been so blessed for the opportunity to be there. I’m thankful to my Heavenly Father for the gospel and for his promises to guide us.

We arrived in Rio early this am…. Waited in the airport for a flight to Sao Paulo… and connecting flight to Florianopolis… this is 2 days in airports… waiting and traveling. We’re tired, and excited – super excited!!! My tail bone hurts already! I prayed a lot… for my girls especially, for my parents… for our safety. I’m so grateful for the gospel and the power of prayer, grateful for my husband and his knowledge and understanding, his willingness to take this trip - He is truly my best friend.

First up this morning was to find the mission home… we went walking up the street it wasn’t too far on the map from the hotel… we took a couple wrong turns – just too early… but we found it!! We were able to meet the APs and deliver the winter clothing that we had brought for the elders. We then went off to lunch and the mall – looking for an electric adapter for my computer. (which we ended up not needing because the newer laptops already come with a converter and work in other countries – did you know that?) We walked the boardwalk and really just enjoyed looking at things, watching people, and comparing the city to places in the US…

For dinner we wanted to try out this place we had seen on our way to the mission home… but when we arrived it was closed (only open for lunch) but we thought we might walk up towards the boardwalk too… as we headed down the street, all of us stopped mid crosswalk and decided to turn back. We headed back to the hotel to ask directions for a place they recommended the night before… it was a little Italian place called “Juca Pato” – only open for dinner – and it was like a brick oven pizzeria… I’ve had bad experience with Pizza in Rio 98… and I preferred to have some salad and pasta… so we ordered. Hi Mom!

Then Michael met us. He had come looking for us @ the hotel and they told him where we had gone to dinner. He came with Elder Perkins to find us. It was a wonderful moment and we enjoyed dinner together. They even ordered the dessert pizza – which was delicious and we all enjoyed it too! We felt blessed to have felt the spirit direct us as we looked for a place to eat… if we had gone the other direction – Elder M would not have been able to find us this evening.

These pictures are out of order... but I want to post them and a few descriptions... someday my posterity will have to read more about this event in my journal writings - it was a very special and touching experience for our family - and our lives have been blessed and strengthened.

President Claudio Costa was the mission president that Daenon served with in Manous Brasil.

Elder Webb & Elder Day also served with Pres Costa in the Manous Mission- Currently we're all living in the Gilbert San Tan Stake, the rumor was that the Stake Presidents in the area all invited The Costas to come to their homes the night before the ground breaking - but Pres Costa declined so he could spend the evening with "His Elders" - it was a special visit.

We literally could have sat for many, many hours and listened to his wonderful stories...

I'm gonna catch up on this blog... Promise! I'll back date the postings so they fall into order... BUT I'd like to say that It's not like I quit... Or that facebook took over my life... or that I've not had anything blog worthy... Or I'm sure that I'll get mroe time... It's more like a jealousy thing... I just can't seem to get my pictures to look good! and the formatting drives me nuts!!! It's really quite annoying to me... and at this point I just don't care... cause I don't have the patience to do anything more about it! So here it goes - I'm gonna get some things posted - pretty or not! That's just how it is. CRAZY HAIR... or... No Hair! (haha) Smart Cookie #1 Smart Cookie #2 If you've been to one quarterly award ceremony - you've been to them all... (Not that I'm complaining...) One of the Hallow's Eve costumes I wore this year... A witch, a farm girl, and I can't remember the other - it was a while ago! (J is one of my fabulous brides that came to buy her perfect gown from me @ Suzannes' - she looks amazing in it!) THIS is us enjoying the Trunk N Treat at moms' ward... We worked our tails off the night before at ours, which was fantastic if I do say so myself... BUT very few pictures. Here is Kaelee with her Carmen Miranda fruit hat, and Kimber is a Tango dancer - Dancing with Grandma... A little bit of fun for everyone!

I've known "Auntie Suzi", the sewing goddess, for most my entire life... she's incredibly talented and hard working... she is the most caring and gracious and loving woman and I've learned many things from her over the years... she even attempted to teach me to sew at one time! She can create miracles with silk and lace! and she's been found working behind the sewing machine for every one of those years... Nearly 18 years ago she created my custom wedding gown from just the picture in a magazine... I still have that picture! and that magazine! :) And she created my friends, my cousins, my sisters, my photographers... etc etc etc... So naturally over the years I've been around Suz - I've gotten my feet wet in the bridal business... And it's nearly an addiction. (Shhh - don't tell) So when the opportunity came this spring for me to take a consultant position at Suzannes' Bridal Boutique - I was not under any illusions and My Family agreed it was the right place, right time and exactly what I needed to do... During my first visit, I had a wonderful experience with Jennifer. LOST: hard drive and planner... = excuse to delay tax preparation. (good one right?)

Sew... a needle pulling thread.

At least once a year I pull out my basic model sewing machine and attempt a project or two... it feeds the creative side of me that comes out occasionally. I've improved over the years... that is my patience for doing creative things... and my efforts are better because I'm less of a perfectionist about it... and even willing to use the seam ripper to undo some messes... and try again. I'm not sure if I have a picture (haven't located everything that went missing with the planner and hard drive) - I'll look... but I've been making hooded towels a baby gifts in the past year... The few that I was given for the girls have been used over and over again from infant to 6+ years - they love the cuddled feeling they get as they are wrapped up in them. THEN I was inspired to attack this project... cut it up and tore it apart and turned it into this... hmmm - I can't find this picture either....

AFTER that - Kimber talked me into making her a birthday dress... pink of course! Kimbers' birthday was special - and we attended Sams' benefit concert for our special friend Chandler who is in Tucson right now recovering from a bone marrow transplant. (see the youtube links posted.) I think I've had enough sewing for awhile... the patches on D's scout shirt will just have to wait. then we had a March BABY Shower:

My sister, MARLA and her BFF APRIL are both having first babys' in the next months(little girls)... It was wonderfully over the top... and we loved every moment of it!!! Even the little American Girl tea party!! Could we please do it again soon? Had great time with all those who came to visit and fest in the pinkness! Daenon turned four-Oh. (need I say more?) - I had a little fun with him and got some of his first scouts to text him about getting old... it took him a while but he caught on - and he enjoyed hearing from the guys!!!

SCOUTing... Daenon is in his element. That means that one weekend a month and every Weds night things are focused on only one thing... skills, skills, and more skills...

and that's just the way it should be.

As a scouting wife... there are honestly things I despise about scouting, BUT then there are these fabulous youngmen who grow in stature, strength, confidence, trust, and testimony...

and in the end it's worth it.

You get it. right?

KIMBER SAYS: "Look Mom I did my hair today....." This is Kimbers' creative/competitive side that says... I can outdo any "hair do" around... Usually she can - she has fabulous hair.

One lovely winter morning

we found ourselves in search of the perfect snow hill....

Granted it was far from the top rated snow mounds our Idaho cousins are familiar with... but this was still a workable location right off the highway and came with a steep drop and a base of powdery white stuff!!!

Our Hartwig cousins came to play too -and that made for the one of the best snow days of the new year!

Gpa & Gma Millyard made a detour from the ranch to join in the fun!

Wall-o-Mike

I just had to post this! - It's Mikes' 20th Birthday and he is fortunate enough to be serving the Lord in Florianopolis Brazil this year.... Here is a picture of moms' "Wall-o-Mike". It started out as a map of Brazil, and slowly morphed into this collaboration of people we don't know and events we've missed... but as you can tell, the light is bright in the faces of those who serve the Lord. It has always amazed me at how the Lord can take a 19 year old boy and give him the opportunity and experience that will benefit him for the rest of his life in just 2 short years.

These are the amazing parents that are beaming from ear-2-ear whenever the "Wall-o-Mike" brings on a conversation of the latest updates and news! Every Monday when/if the inbox has a letter from a missionary, they are thrilled! They have been so thoughtful and prayerful in supporting Michael and it's a reward in their lives to know he is working hard and giving all he has. We were able to speak with Elder Mike on Christmas Day - It was a real treat to hear his voice and share the events of Christmas with him. He was speaking Portuguese with Daenon and has come along well in his first 7 months. He's excited about the opportunities and experiences that the Lord has in store for him, and says: "its' been the hardest and the most rewarding experience of my life so far!" - He said that he walks "about 5 miles on a slow day, comes home eats a banana and go to bed!" He's been fortunate to be in his first area for a few months and has really enjoyed getting to know the people. They've had quite a few marriages and baptisms and there's always a birthday party invite too. We've loved the pictures he's sent home and the letters/emails even the short ones are enjoyable! We've had a good laugh over the mail system and the challenge of sending packages to him... but it's the thought that counts - Right? :)

A few years back we felt the need to express our love for the Savior in this public display and this is what it's become... the manger (musical), the angel, the deer (instead of sheep), the wreaths and the Star.

How many days of madness are left?? I love this advent ~ it's usually the first to hang up!

AND A new addition this year ~ A star makes the perfect holder for the "Santa Key" - It's left outside on Christmas Eve for Santa to gain magical entrance without the risk of a chimney!

The tree, which the cats continue to devour this year, has been redecorated at a rate of 13+ ornaments a night... but it's beautiful and sparkles nonetheless and it brings Christmas light!

Gratitude: The feeling of being thankful

Expressing gratitude isn't hard in my life... the blessing are bountiful!

My miracle girls - I love them! They are truly a gift. (D cooks a fine bird!)

The strength of youth... the ability to get on my knees (these girls are always up to fun!)

My Husband: who can see beauty around him, loves to be outdoors, and is valiant in his labors.

That my home, although at times it seems inadequate... it does provide shelter from the elements... and is much cosier than this.

We were blessed with the occasional opportunity to speak in church this last month... the topic was "Gratitude for the Plan of Happiness" - as I prepared, many things came to my mind that I am thankful for - So I must list a few more:

My Primary Class... the youth that I have worked with this past year are pure in heart, eager to learn and understand the scriptures and they love their families. Serving the Lord helps us establish priorities. It gets us to look outward instead of inward, and it is a true expression of charity.
Family Relationships... this is what we came to earth for! Building Eternal Families. Sometimes we may put boundaries on who or what family is. But the truth is that we are all brothers and sisters, and Our Heavenly Father knows and loves each of us. He has given to each of us a role in helping assist each other on the path to return to Him. He did this by eternal design, that as we serve and strengthen each other we can become more like Him.
Church Leaders... What would this year have been like without the comforting council and direction from a loving Bishop Fleming, Stake President Riggs, Elder Arnold (seventy) who came for stake conference, and President Monson of the True Gospel of Jesus Christ? - I have feasted upon their words and felt peace.
Adversity... It may be strange to list this on my gratitude list... but it's true. Without the adversity of this life - my faith would be weak, pride would prevail, service would waiver, and my heart would be hardened to the promptings of the spirit whose direction I desperately depend on. We've been told that our experiences will be for our good. Even hard experiences, that we'd like to give-up on! When we pray with a grateful heart for our adversities, acknowledging the Lords' hand in our lives, we are expressing faith.
My Savior... There is no adequate way to express the love I have for my Elder Brother, the pains he bore for me alone are more than I can comprehend, yet I know that when I trust in His words and lay my personal burdens at His feet - the peace I feel and the comfort I receive are the most healing of any kind. True and Real. The blessings of Baptism, Sacrament, and Temple worship, fill me with intent to love, serve and honor Him. the Promise that I may feel His love in my life and in the life to come is worth whatever he may ask of me. 'For God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.' (John 3:16)

I hope your "Gratitude List" is filled with as many blessings as mine and many many more!

At last... is 6 months to long?

AT LAST - the long awaited time has arrived...

Is 6 months too long to wait to hear the comforting and powerful and directive words spoken in love by those called of God? It almost feels that way.

I was soooo looking forward to a nice quiet weekend - maybe work on a little sewing project: Halloween costume - maybe sort some long neglected paperwork: bills, schoolwork, home listings, and life coaching notes, don't all mix together well; I had visions of making homemade rolls (start a new tradition - "conference rolls"), I thought of the beloved conference packet for entertaining the girls, a reward for their efforts to be attentive and yet knew that would only last so long... not all of that happened...

in fact I spontaneously changed the goals along the way... This was my Sat a.m. quick thinking "Conference Bingo" for Kaelee - she made it into a great game for her little petshop pals... she actually listened for every keyword to be said and got blackout on the last talk! We recycled for Sunday and it worked it's magic twice!

Kimber's Bingo card - (no picture) was more picture perfect, with my abstract sketches of the keywords for her to listen for... she used a jar of spare change, adding a coin every time she heard the keywords... she ended each talk with a pile of coins on a few keywords and we would say - What was that talk about? She could give the answer just by looking at which pile was the largest! By Sunday she was done with the jar -but busily copied my sketches over to make her own conference game! (love her artistic talents)

I just laughed and loved when Elder Bednar talked to parents about how to persevere in spite of interruptions like: he's touching me, he's looking at me, he's breathing my air...

I knew my luck wouldn't hold out... but success comes in the consistency... right?

And I can just be thankful that unlike my parents, It's not necessary to get up, dressed and to the stake center early enough to get a bench for my family. (although it might be nice to go by myself without distraction!)Instead of Conference Rolls.... We made "Conference Cookies " - thanks to Pillsbury dough boy! Daenon cooked - Breakfast, and Dinner - cookies for Lunch! :) I think that "daddy cooking" should be a conference tradition - it was so wonderful!He says: Let's not.

I'm grateful for the "timeout" this weekend offered me, for my prayers answered, for the insights received, for the words of truth and testimony spoken. My heart was touched and my notebook full of notes and impressions, I can't wait for the Ensign to come and the printed words to penetrate my mind with those moments I was too distracted from to learn... but either way I know that this has to last me the next 6 long months.

P.S. One of my most favorite things about enjoying conference in the heart of my home is my audition-less membership into the MoTab, and the ability to dream I'm there 4 real.

It was the perfect baptism day! Daddy was determined to not have a do-over... and had to swish Kaelee's hair down under as it started to come out of her hairband. She gave him a funny look when she came up and everyone laughed when he gave the thumbs up sign! She had lots of family and friends that attended. (And we missed a few that couldn't make it) We're so thankful for the love and support she felt. Kaelee was the first one dressed and returned to the chapel to personally thank everyone for coming with a beautiful smile and hugs. We haven't gotten to the written thankyous... but our intentions are good!

Kimber has been wanting to ride her bike without the training wheels for a few weeks... (since around her birthday back in March.) Mom tried once or twice... but somehow riding a bike with your feet while reaching for the ground doesn't quite keep the pedals moving around fast enough to keep the wheels moving... So, Dad finally got the hint and took her to the park and she DID IT!!! and she rode all the way home!!

Primary is So Cool!!

Our Primary Theme 2009 Plaques!

They turned out so original and creative!

The most incredible 10 year olds around!!!

(plus one who left before I could grab my camera!) I haven't served in primary since before I got married... do you count nursery? (except for a short time when I was achievement day leader about 8 years ago) Talk about intimidating! Anyways, I am having such a fun time getting to know these incredible girls and having them at my house twice a month! I'm also team teaching the Sunday Primary Valiant 10 class and enjoying the challenge of studying church history. I love that these kids have such great questions and they are so quick to apply gospel principles to their own lives. It's truely amazing! One day after I'd given a lesson a couple hands went up for questions. They shyly asked how long I would be their class teacher... (that's not always an easy question, when you know how quickly things can change in a ward organization) So I answered saying that I would teach as long as I was called to teach... and then I asked them if they were trying to get rid of me? They all laughed and said No! I asked if they would like me to be their teacher all year long? They all cheered and said Yes! What more validation could one need?

What could be more eighties than big hair (which she made me pull back in a clip), purple eye shadow, authentic Maui & Sons surf shirt (compliments of nana - who saved everything), pegged pants, slouch socks, and deck shoes - can't forget the bangle bracelets and pearls!

Of course Kaelee has more school spirit than most kids and was the ONLY GIRL in her 2nd grade class to dress up with only one days notice! I even prepped her to keep saying

This was truly a fabulous wedding! Danielle & her mom planned a lovely event and the guests all had a wonderful time! Some of my favorite moments... Jason and his "perm-a-grin", the sweet vows they shared, the evening train ride through an unusually peaceful zoo, Picture show of bride & groom... (we really got to know more about Danielle - she's such a great fit for J!), Star Wars, great family moments like getting to know Jess'man, seeing Grandpa J & Lauren burn up the dance floor and... loving all the animal print garb, and most of us Dancing like no one was lookin'! There's were too many pictures to choose from! It was great to see you all! And we missed those MIA.

Economics Lesson: "Bail Out"

Shortly after class, an economics student approaches his economics professor and says, "I don't understand this stimulus bill. Can you explain it to me?" The professor replied, "I don't have any time to explain it at my office, but if you come over to my house on Saturday and help me with my weekend project, I'll be glad to explain it to you." The student agreed. At the agreed-upon time, the student showed up at the professor's house. The professor stated that the weekend project involved his backyard pool. They both went out back to the pool, and the professor handed the student a bucket. Demonstrating with his own bucket, the professor said, "First, go over to the deep end, and fill your bucket with as much water as you can." The student did as he was instructed. The professor then continued, "Follow me over to the shallow end, and then dump all the water from your bucket into it." The student was naturally confused, but did as he was told. The professor then explained they were going to do this many more times, and began walking back to the deep end of the pool. The confused student asked, "Excuse me, but why are we doing this?" The professor matter-of-factly stated that he was trying to make the shallow end much deeper. The student didn't think the economics professor was serious, but figured that he would find out the real story soon enough.

However, after the 6th trip between the shallow end and the deep end, the student began to become worried that his economics professor had gone mad. The student finally replied, "All we're doing is wasting valuable time and effort on unproductive pursuits. Even worse, when this process is all over, everything will be at the same level it was before, so all you'll really have accomplished is the destruction of what could have been truly productive action!" The professor put down his bucket and replied with a smile, "Congratulations. You now understand the stimulus bill."

(ah just kidding)

One Cold February Monday Morning~ Kimber got me to help her invent some instruments for her band. Yes, that's right ~my 4 yr old is realizing her life long dream and starting her own band! So we cut and taped and wrapped and ribboned a few boxes, we added beans and wires to concoct a guitar, tambourine, horn, drum, and of course a microphone.

This girl has planned it all!

She wasn't sure how to go about recruiting or auditioning for her backup band... "maybe we should take flyers to all the neighbors mom." "How about ~ a sign posted on the house front for all too see!"

(I'm sure dad was thrilled - it stayed taped for about 2 days until the yucky wind blew it down.)

So on Friday... (Can you believe I got a whole weeks worth of entertainment out of this one?) Kimber's preschool pals came to our house to be a part of Kimbers' Band Plan. I must say I was quite impressed these kids got right into it, just like Kimber had been directing them for at least a week!

The last 2 years we dodged this school fundraiser... but no excuse was good enough this time! I just couldn't push my dear to tears. What's $15 bucks for her to have a great time with her friends and to drag dad along...

who was I to tell her no? Daddy couldn't either!

D actually did a great job of hiding his insecurity about "who" might join him in the daddy wallflower group! haha. But the request for me to call the school and find out the dress code... that was a good one! (No - I did not call!) On January 9th 1993, Daenon's grandfather performed the most important ceremony of my life. He married Daenon and I in the Arizona Tempe for "time and all eternity" and blessed us to have lives filled with joy as we committed ourselves to give 110% to each other. He said "a marriage takes more than 50% from each of you... you both have to give everything you have and then some... because at times one of you will not have as much to give and it will take extra effort on the others part to pull together through those times." He was a wise man. Daenon and I have used the 110% line over and over through these 16 years... and somehow it seems like we're still toddlers... learning with baby steps. I was talking with my dad the other day, he talked about how his life with my mom has gone through stages and he now feels a level of devotion that he never imagined, but that he saw his father and mother have in their older years... Devotion. I like that word. Devotion: earnest attachment to a cause, person, etc. Profound dedication. It makes the definition of marriage look pale and weak in comparison. (you can look it up) Daenon, Happy Anniversary! Thank you for putting up with me, for being my friend and confidant, for cheering me on when I fall, for calling me on my bull, and for making dreams come true! There's definately a priority to what comes first in my list of "ToDo's" - and sugar cookies usually NOT at the top of the list...
Such a pitiful mess of flour and sugar and rolling dough and cutting shapes and rolling dough and cutting shapes over and over... did I mention flour everywhere?
And then baking and cooling, and frosting and sprinkles, and did I mention the mess... and the fact that I don't really like them hard and crunchy and over frosted and sprinkled... (unless their "lofthouse" from the store - of course!) SO, with the Jolly O'man on his way and my girls so positive that he wants cookies when he gets here... So Thankful I made this remarkable discovery:

Okay, it only took me 2 days, but the cards are mailed!! All 80 stamps are gone... I only have 2 last minute packages to get out tomorrow... they won't make it by Christmas. Oops! But hopefully before the New Year. If by some odd chance - I didn't get a card to you... the mailman lost it... or I probably didn't have a clue you would want one... or just didn't have your address... cause you moved OR I'm getting pretty bad at record keeping and couldn't find an address.... or you didn't send me a card yet either - so here's the pictures just in case... and email me your address! BONUS: If you live by me... it still might be coming I have a stack to deliver too!

P.S. - I've mailed cards for 14 years now... and I'm having doubts about mailing cards next year... that was a a lot of work AND a small fortune! ;)

I'm way overdue for a spring clean... you know the "we're moving" kind of decluttering... Really pack up boxes of items long forgotten and shoved in a hiding place! Just to get RID of extra snuff!

Fortunately for me - I only get this nudge once every couple years!

I've read tons of things on organization, decluttering, making room in the room you have, etc... (not that Daenon can tell!) It's hard to get past the initial storm of energy it takes to emotionally move from room to room without interruption (Is there such a thing?) and actually accomplish a task so large! I usually get half way down the list... a huge pile in the hall... and no more steam! Then I fight with myself for a day or two or sometimes three to continue on no matter how painful it is!

Get this stuff to the Garage!!! There's no going back now!

"No - not the garage!"he says... "just put it in the truck take it straight to Goodwill."

After all of this who has energy left to actually hold a "Garage Sale" who me?????

Book Report!

I found this book at Deseret Book this week! Read it quickly - in a day. I enjoyed the parable like story written about a Father that is distraught about how to help his wayward son. He's detached and can't relate to the son's rebellion to all the good things he's been taught. When post it notes begin to be left anonymously in his office - He is taken on a journey that leads him to the Book of Mormon to find direction in how the Lord would have him help his son. I could write more... but it doesn't seem to come out making very much sense yet. I'll need to do a little more studying on the Anti-Nephi-Lehis in the Book of Alma. Also re-read Beware of Pride Pres Benson in Ensign, May 1989. An interesting thought I had... it's easy to evaluate the rebellion of another; and even much easier to justify the rebellion in myself. This must be why the Lord warns us of making judgements and to avoid the pride of a hardened heart.

1ST - Register to vote! I'm not advertising what my opinion is on who or what you vote for - JUST VOTE! Google it - if you have too! 2nd - Request an EARLY BALLOT! - This means you don't have to stand in line. Even if you forget to mail the ballot early... on Tues, Nov 4th you can walk right past all the people waiting in line making small talk with people they will probably never see again to drop your ballot in the box! just takes a matter of minutes! Google this too! 3rd - Brewer Family Reunion! Hotel Reservations & T-shirts (okay this isn't really my job - but I should be the Nag about it some so it gets done!-Right?) 4th - Halloween costumes. Kimber - Little Mermaid. Done ($15 Kohls) Kaelee - Witch. sew gown. buy hat. maybe nose. have tights. 5th - Help Kimber plan a party that actually happens. (my inability to grasp the emotional needs of her social agenda has been truly gripping her with a "my mom keeps screwing up my party issue" that could scar her for the rest of her life! I'm not joking here!) 6th - Get Scott's listing sold! Central Mesa (Gilbert & Broadway) 2 bedroom with a bonus could be 3rd, nice open layout, lots of storage, new kitchen, carpet, paint, blinds... $135k! Haven't' seen these $$$ #'s in a few long years! WOW!

BTW: These are not in order of priority - more like order of the amount of time it will take to accomplish! (I wish there were only 6! haha)

My head seems to be going a hundred miles a minute and I'm still not "getting all of it" One Thing consuming my mind tonight: Our Country. What a crazy state of frantic confusion things are in when you listen to the news. The world hangs on the brink of the end of life as we have known it for the past centuries. As the congress has failed to approve a $700billion bail out of financially unsound companies headed by people who walk away unscathed, who knew better.

Competition. Greed. Pride. Selfish. Success.

I occasionally listen to the Glenn Beck show as I do my nightly routine... Tonight he finally got some Wall Street Investors to bring this catastrophe down to earth... If you are living pay check to paycheck or out of your means.

$$$ QUIT SPENDING NOW. $$$

(simple thought)

Other thoughts I heard tonight... We've taken money for granted and bought on compulsion. We've spent our country out of money. We've lived on credit until there is none left to borrow. We can not afford to live the lifes we've made. We will see our standard of living simplified drastically in the next 18-24 months. Inflation will be more than we can afford on the wages we earn today. Having a job may mean you are the best at what you do, and value doing the job. Saving money, thrifty living, basics of life, the ways of our grandparents may become the ways of our future.

New Residents @ our House!

Here are the newest additions to our cat & mousehole... I'm not sure how this happened - confused state at our house - determining who makes decisions is a very complicated process around here! SO~ it took 4 weeks, a family council lasting far past bedtime, and an official ballot process run unfairly by dad! And they have official names now! (I think)

Jackx: Boy, black, curious and a cuddler.. very smart! Ginger: Girl, is brown tabby stripe, cautious, loud meow, and loves to be rubbed IF not held. wines alot! They are brother & sister and adjusting quite well to spoiled kitty lifestyle... IF you call getting dressed up like a doll, held like a baby, posed for pictures and chased after by two screaming girls spoiled! AND they even made it a weekend on their own while we reunioned @ the Ranch! (Thanks Ev & Ashlyn for checking on them!)

The YW Box!

A couple weeks ago - I went to the garage for my box. It's a pretty ordinary box on the outside... And finding it in my garage could be a story by its self... (have you seen the # of boxes in my garage... still packed from the move we were making 2 years ago and never did) - I know it should be theraputic to clean the garage and maybe I'll find out sometime in October when I can stand to do more than run from the air conditioned house to the car and vice versa. Anyways... the box. It has treasured young women things in it. I'm looking for something specific... I know I used to have it many moons ago, when I started my first transition from a young women to a young women advisor. A tricky event in of itself... I remember thinking I knew so much about what the YW needed - because I had just recently been there myself. The box is a mix of items that touched my spirit - taught me great truths, a few things I could not part with - unless some terible tragic accident came upon my garage and then I would never remember what I lost. (hopefully)

Well, in this file box, among its many pages and files, I find "the list". The list of those sweet girls who are now beautiful women, I find the memories of those I shared my own youth with, and they are all added to the incredible list of those I now am getting the privilege to serve & love.

(Goal: insert all names!)

The BOX brings back memories of the sweet MiaMaid Advisor that I really was a "brat" to on occasion! I hope she forgave me! The President that had TP to clean up a few too many times, she use to call us "Young Vermon"... she made the BEST cookies in the world, She always had gum in her purse -loved all that! I remember the testimony of my Laurel Advisor... it was so sweet and true and she really emulated the Savior. I'm sure she had tough times as a young mom striving to relate, and busy laurels are not the easiest to reach, but she stuck with it, and I loved her. There where so many long that road...

THE BOX brings back memories of a calling to serve in Young Womens... as I was set apart the bishop told me this would be a long term calling, that I would need to learn & commit myself to these YW aound share in their trials and successes. I think this calling lasted 5 years. (I was in a pretty hard place by then; dealing with the effects of infertility...) It was so rewarding to see each of these YW find their place in this world, high school friendships, talents, struggles, work together, college, missions, marriages, babies; some of these stories are happier than others~ but they are all a part of me in some little ways.

But this time, the BOX, is only needed for a short moment.

That's what happens when you are released from a calling.

Packed back away - it goes to the garage - with a few items added and a longer list of names that I love.

Hurricane Eve: 3 years later...

I've been waiting for Venessa to get to the writing stage in her recovery process from Katrina... and all that followed after. Below is the first installment- episode 1 and this is mild compared to some of the thoughts and feelings I've seen her process in the last few years... but I know she has a fabulous way of telling a story like it is and still able to reflect on her true feelings in a positive light or at least make people laugh & cry about it.

Ive just been ignoring it.When I lived in Mississippi we evacuated several times and nothing ever happened. (I mean, til Katrina.) But still, that was the first huge storm there in 30 years. We had just moved in when Hurricane Ivan was heading our way and I first felt the shock of figuring out how to board up a house and hunt for heirlooms in still unpacked boxes while nursing a baby and herding the other kids in circles. When we backed out of that driveway I felt like there was no gravel beneath my feet and that I was purposefully walking away from reality. Then, hours and hours later, I was up all night in some seedy Bates motel in the middle of nowhere-Oklahoma with a tiny baby, two little kids, an awesome little sis,and my 2 smuggled-in cats. Paul was required to stay on the Air Force base since he's an emergency guy and Ivan was supposed to hit RIGHT THERE and ANDERSON COOPER told me it was gonna happen any minute. But it didnt. It went just east at the last minute and missed our house by 30 miles. What a fluke people said. Just craziness they muttered. Our church went and helped our neighbors recover. But it didnt hit my house.The Eve of the other hurricanes after Ivan werent nearly so eventful. We either didnt leave or we werent in town. Although, if you were out of town during a hurricane, then you didnt have a way to get to your special belongings. That happened to me once too -just before Katrina- and that had it's own brand of horror. Totally helpless. No way to save the scrapbooks, no photos, no baby booties, no grandma's dolls. Reason #7,846 NOT to ever, ever live in the South. Now, I've been ignoring this hurricane Gustav. I mean, I even spelled it wrong yesterday (while I was ignoring it). And you know, I am a naturally good speller. But I was so ignoring it that it took hours for me to even notice my spelling error. So proud of my ignoring skills. Ok, maybe I checked the hurricane updates on the internet, but it was just a peak and then I quickly pushed it away and said, NOPE, it will head west or east, or better yet to the North Pole, so no worries. This ignoring it skill, this lovely coping skill, this favorite pastime, I've honed it ever so well since Katrina . . . . And now an hour ago, after 48 hours of people mentioning the hurricane to me and me so fully not worrying about it . . . my husband walked though the doors of our AZ home, and asked me if I might have heard about the hurricane heading for our house in Mississippi.I jumped. What? There's a HURRICANE headed for our house in Mississippi? ARE YOU SERIOUS? Paul noticing something means it must be real. Cuz I'm prrretty sure he tries not to notice things whenever possible. So now I'm hooked. Now there's trouble. Now it's Hurricane Eve.So, now there's a hurricane headed to my house. In a couple of hours. The first home we ever owned. The Katrina house. The home where I felt every second of Hurricane Eve as though it were happening in slow motion somewhere far, far in front of me. This was the Hurricane Eve where my husband was deployed in the middle east and acting like a stranger. The night that my children screamed that they were bored as I strained to hear a few words of news on the radio. This was the night I drove east when my heart cried to be heading west. That house. The house that drowned and died in Katrina and has only now been painstakingly resurrected. The house that will have a "For Sale" sign in front of it just as soon as I get enough nickels together for the carpet and appliances. That house. After 3 years of life-rotting hell, money grubbing lying lawyers, realtor scams, crooked smug judges and contractors, flooded courthouses, insurance nightmares and the absolute inabilty to fully explain to anyone how alone and desperate it feels to be the person "in charge" of this financial and soul wrenching disaster . . . . . . . . now, tonight, tomorrow, there's going to be a hurricane that thinks it's going to ruin my made-up happy ending . . . . . . . my ending. The one . . . . . . where the house is sold . . . . I have paid off all of my loans and debts . . . . . and I hand someone ELSE the keys to the front door to their new home. . . . and I wish them a solemn Hurricane Eve. (BTW: It is now 9pm AZ time on Hurricane Eve. Paul is snoring on the couch. )

Thanks Liz - I needed a boost in the right direction today! 1. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant. 2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Buy a lock if you have to. 3. When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, 'My purpose is to __________ today.' 4. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants. 5. Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli , almonds & walnuts. 6. Try to make at least three people smile each day. 7. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. In stead invest your energy in the positive present moment. 8. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card. 9. Life isn't fair, but it's still good. 10. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 11. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does. 12. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. 13. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present. 14. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about. 15. No one is in charge of your happiness except you. 16. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?' 17. Forgive everyone for everything. 18. Birthdays are really low on my list of grand events in life... and have been that way for many, many years! I'm never good at remembering birthdays, either (sorry! It's true - please forgive me if I've missed an important day for you!) None the less, birthdays always come! Finding the right class! Kaelee starts 2nd grade this year! She's excited and nervous too! She came home the second day and announced that they had not done anything fun yet... no coloring or art at all -just testing all the time! I had to break it to her that second grade is a little harder than first grade and she'll probably have to wait until Friday for Art. (Poor thing!) Kimber starts Mrs Debbie's preschool this year! We are so excited to have a backpack and papers! She loves to plan out her clothes and her transportation method, walk, ride bike, rollar skate, scooter, should be an interesting year!

Canyon Creek Overnight

Girls pose on log, Swing we found by the creek, Dad fishing, Cold creek water, Target practice We took a quik trip up to the mountains this weekend... had a great time getting out of the "HeatWave" in the valley, enjoyed exploring, fishing, and playing in the creek, & moved our camp trailer to Papas' Ranch! - All in all it was a fun little trip! Growing up my dad's family had annual camping Clement Reunions @ Canyon Creek.. it was closed for camping after the Rodeo-Chediski fire and has only been re-opend in the last year or two. I have to admit I was a bit emotional as we entered the area... many birthdays I celebrated there - with my family and cousins; and here I am having another one. Looking back those are the days that I seemed to rush through as quickly as possible - but now I would take them back in a second if I could.
